Mike Posner “31 Minutes to Takeoff” Preview [Leak]

I recently got my hands on a hard copy of Mike Posners debut album, “31 Minutes to Takeoff” and I must say I am quite impressed with the finished product. I’ve been a fan of this kids for a few years and his creativity and style have progressed since day one.

Much like T-Pain, Mike Posner is a former rapper turned singer. As I wrote about earlier this year, Mike wrote, produced, recorded and released a rap mixtape in 2005 from the comfort of his basement. Less than 5 years later, he’s touring the country, waking up everyday in a new city, recording in the same million dollar facilities as some of our favorite artists.

Over the course of his 3 mixtapes, Mike Posner has matured into much more than a pot smoking prodigy. He’s an instant classic. A few short years ago, “Cooler than Me” was just an impromptu answer to a snooty classmate and today it’s one of the catchiest pieces of music I’ve heard in a long, long time. With songs like the somber “Gone in September” where he relates summer love with returning to school to “Cheated” where he sings ‘All that time I was hypnotized while you [fucked] behind my back. Now my mind keeps me up all night, why’d you have to say bye like that? I should’ve cheated on you! I was everything you wanted and more… nobody told me I was dating a ho.‘ the thoughts that run rampant in the mind of this young man are pretty obvious.

Did anybody else catch the shout out to his ex girlfriend toward the end of “Cheated”? Classy… Other tracks that stood out to me were Delta 1406, Do You Wanna, Deja Vu and Falling. Production credits include himself, Cisco Adler, Benny Blanco and Greg Kurstin.

The production on the album is very funky and euphoric… I like to call it electronically psychedelic. The synth’s and basslines are reminiscent of the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. By taking old ideas and reworking them I can honestly say that there is no one around with a sound like Mike. He’s fallen in a niche all his own and cannot be compared to any of the sing-songy types of modern music. He’s no Cudi or Drake… The genre isn’t soul or pop or hip hop. It’s just Mike Posner doing Mike Posner and that’s what makes this guy so damn likable.

Go out & support the album August 10th. Pre order it here or on iTunes.
