It’s been a while since I did a ‘Bumpin at the Moment’ segment on Leftover Cake but you know what. All droughts end sooner or later and I’m glad this one ended when it did. This track was only in my inbox for about an hour or so and already it’s got a ton of plays in my iTunes. In fact, I have yet to turn it off…
Philly native Dave Patten creates his own brand of music from start to finish. Everything you hear on the singer/songwriter’s self-produced albums – from acoustic and electric guitars, piano, drums, bass, synthesized horns and string parts – is played by Dave. Rarely does a musician have the ability and talent to synchronize each aspect of his tracks to the exact specifications of his creative vision. Don’t let that deter you – because unlike those artists – Dave’s vocals alone standout from what you’d expect of this skinny, white kid. The level of emotion that belt out in his raspy, rock inspired voice – combined with hip-hop beats, set him apart from the multitude of like-sounding musicians.
Looking for references? Look no further. Multi-platinum selling artist Wyclef Jean saw Dave’s adaptation of his song “Sweetest Girl†on his YouTube and invited Dave to open for him at Atlantic City’s House of Blues. Need more? How about when Brian Kennedy, the producer of Rhianna’s “Disturbia” discovered Dave’s cover of the song and was so impressed that he added it to his own MySpace. The level of support Dave receives from fellow musicians and his fans continues to grow and I don’t expect his reputation to shrink anytime soon.
This song is also a change from what you might expect from Meek Mill, showing his versatility as an artist, be sure to expect more collaborations from these two in the near future. I get off on positive vibes. Sue me. Just give it one listen and if it doesn’t end up on repeat… I give up.
Dave’s new album “Exposure” is available through iTunes and for free on his site http://www.davepatten.com
